Abbeville is a town in Lafayette County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 419 at the 2010 census. Abbeville was originally settled by pioneers from Abbeville, South Carolina in the 1830s. They lived in apparent peace with the local Chickasaw Indians, whose Chief Toby Tubby owned and operated a ferry along the Memphis-Oxford trade route. During the American Civil War, Abbeville was almost completely destroyed in the Vicksburg Campaign. Abbeville post office was established September 28, 1843, with John B. Davis as first postmaster. In 1950 Abbeville had a population of 275. Abbeville is located at 34°30?16?N 89°30?3?W? / ?34.50444°N 89.50083°W? / 34.50444; -89.50083 (34.504525, -89.500713). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.5 square miles (9.1 km2), all of it land.
