Albany is a city in Stearns County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,561 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2), of which, 1.4 square miles (3.6 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) of it (7.28%) is water. Interstate 94 and Minnesota State Highway 238 are two of the main routes in the city. The City of Albany was incorporated in 1890, but not without a struggle. The first petition to incorporate, signed by 33 male residents of the proposed area of incorporation, was presented to the Stearns county Board of Commissioners on November 30, 1888. The County Board issued a notice calling for an election on the issue at the District 59 schoolhouse the following January.
