Albany is a village in Athens County, Ohio, United States. The population was 808 at the 2000 census. Albany is located at 39°13?44?N 82°12?1?W? / ?39.22889°N 82.20028°W? / 39.22889; -82.20028 (39.228787, -82.200363). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), of which, 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2) of it is land and 0.80% is water. Albany, Ohio was founded in 1842. It was one of several stops in Athens County for the Underground Railroad and many former slaves decided to stay in the village. Albany Enterprise Academy, the first school in Athens County for African Americans was in the village, which was then over 90% African American. As of the census of 2000, there were 808 people, 352 households, and 222 families residing in the village. The population density was 649.6 people per square mile (251.6/km²).
