Alder takes its name from Alder Creek (named by Henry Edgar in 1863), the site of the second major gold discovery in Montana. Alder is located at 45°19?28?N 112°6?29?W? / ?45.32444°N 112.10806°W? / 45.32444; -112.10806 (45.324531, -112.108035). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.2 km2), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 116 people, 48 households, and 25 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 57.6 people per square mile (22.3/km²). There were 69 housing units at an average density of 34.3 per square mile (13.3/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 100.00% White.
