Aplington is a city in Butler County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,054 at the 2000 census. Aplington was originally Fort Aplington, a US Army outpost until the fort burnt down in 1885. By then a small town had been built nearby and, although much of the town's economy was based on serving the fort, managed to survive. The town kept the name of Fort Aplington until 1925 when it was changed to its current name. Aplington is located at 42°34?57?N 92°52?57?W? / ?42.5825°N 92.8825°W? / 42.5825; -92.8825 (42.582543, -92.882530). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.5 kmē), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,054 people, 439 households, and 302 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,818.0 people per square mile (701.6/kmē).
