According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 81.7 square miles (212 km2), of which, 80.6 square miles (209 km2) of it is land and 1.1 square miles (2.8 km2) of it (1.39%) is water. Around Ashland are the smaller towns and townships of Masardis, Oxbow Plantation, Portage, Sheridan, Nashville Plantation, and Garfield Plantation. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,474 people, 629 households, and 398 families residing in the town. The population density was 18.3 people per square mile (7.1/kmē). There were 760 housing units at an average density of 9.4 per square mile (3.6/kmē). The racial makeup of the town was 98.78% White, 0.88% Native American, 0.20% Asian, and 0.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.07% of the population.
