It is part of the Lakeland?Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. Auburndale was founded in 1880 by Frank Fuller seeking refuge from chilly winters in the Northeast United States. Auburndale is located at 28°04?01?N 81°47?43?W? / ?28.066969°N 81.795252°W? / 28.066969; -81.795252. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.3 square miles (24 km2). 5.2 square miles (13 km2) of it is land and 4.1 square miles (11 km2) of it (43.87%) is water. Auburndale is located in the humid subtropical zone (Köppen climate classification: Cfa). There are five commissioners on the city commission.
