Belding is a city in Ionia County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,877 at the 2000 census. Belding is a small rural city surrounded almost entirely by farmland. Prior to 1871, Belding was known as "Hog Wallow," "Broas Rapids," and "Patterson Mills." According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.9 square miles (13 km2), of which, 4.7 square miles (12 km2) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) of it (3.29%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 5,877 people, 2,185 households, and 1,470 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,246.1 per square mile (480.7/kmē). There were 2,289 housing units at an average density of 485.3 per square mile (187.2/kmē). The racial makeup of the city was 96.46% White, 0.39% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races.
