Belhaven is a town in Beaufort County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,968 at the 2000 census. Belhaven is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. Belhaven is the hometown of singer Little Eva whose song "The Loco-motion" was a US #1 hit in 1962. Belhaven is located at 35°32?35?N 76°37?24?W? / ?35.54306°N 76.62333°W? / 35.54306; -76.62333 (35.542930, -76.623278). It is on the north shore of the Pungo River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2), of which, 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) of it (21.05%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,968 people, 827 households, and 530 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,313.4 people per square mile (506.6/kmē).
