Bridgewater is a town in Windsor County, Vermont, United States. The population was 980 at the 2000 census. Bridgewater contains the hamlets of Bridgewater Village, Bridgewater Corners, West Bridgewater, and Bridgewater Center (formerly called Briggs). Bridgewater was the birthplace of Zadock Thompson, naturalist and identifier of the whale bones found by railroad workers near Charlotte, Vermont. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 49.5 square miles (128.3 km2), all land. The Ottauquechee River flows through the town. As of the census of 2000, there were 980 people, 395 households, and 250 families residing in the town. The population density was 19.8 people per square mile (7.6/km2). There were 582 housing units at an average density of 11.7 per square mile (4.5/km2).
