Charlotte ( /??r?l?t/) is a town in Chittenden County, Vermont, United States. The town was named for Sofia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, youngest daughter of Duke Charles Louis Frederick of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The population was 3,569 at the 2000 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 50.4 square miles (130.6 km2), of which 41.5 square miles (107.4 km2) is land and 9.0 square miles (23.2 km2) (17.76%) is water. Charlotte is home to Mount Philo, the state's first and most frequently visited state park. As of the census of 2000, there were 3,569 people, 1,287 households, and 990 families residing in the town. The population density was 86.0 people per square mile (33.2/km2). There were 1,500 housing units at an average density of 36.2 per square mile (14.0/km2).
