"Dusty" Rhoades, a young Cheyenne Wells rancher, relocated to Texas in the 1930s, where he was a founder of the American Quarter Horse Association, based in Amarillo. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2), all of it land.
