Clifton is part of the Safford Micropolitan Statistical Area. Clifton and Morenci, Arizona are considered to be an economic unit by the Arizona Department of Commerce. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 15.0 square miles (39 km2), of which 14.9 square miles (39 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2), or 0.80%, is water.
